Means of Books is a network of publishers, printers, bookmakers, and other interconnected creative labor workers sharing resources with one another. We are motivated by a shared goal of sustaining our creative practices over time without compromising or censoring our values in exchange for conditional institutional funding.

We support one another's care-focused work and affirm our collective humanity amidst working in industries that normalize artist exploitation and reward white supremacy culture.

Together, we possess everything we need to sustain our work. This interdependent support system lessens the financial dependency on extractive relationships that consume our physical, mental, and emotional energy.

Means of Books is a mutual aid support system established by For the Birds Trapped in Airports in May 2024. Those in the Means of Books network have access to the production capabilities of the FTBTIA studio in Los Angeles regardless of their financial circumstances. The members of this network are supporting one another through providing skills, resources, and by communicating about their experiences in the interest of sustaining their collective creative work and well-being.

ARE YOU AN ARTS WORKER WHOSE LIVELIHOOD IS CONNECTED TO YOUR LABOR?
EXPERIENCING BURNOUT / FINANCIAL INSECURITY / A NEED FOR SUPPORT OUTSIDE OF YOURSELF?
FEAR YOUR SOLIDARITY WITH OPPRESSED PEOPLES DESTABILIZES YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE?
DESIRING TO FEEL VALUED AS A REAL PERSON WITH FEELINGS AND LIMITS?

The Means of Books network is an expanding one.

If you are part of a press or arts entity that shapes (or wishes to shape) its work and structure against individualism, exploitative labor expectations, and white supremacy culture, please reach out.

If you are not a press or arts entity, but want to support this cause, you can make a tax deductible donation to For the Birds Trapped in Airports here.
